As a growing number of people are choosing foods from local sources so that they can know exactly what ingredients they are eating and the method in which those ingredients have been grown and harvested, certified organic pet food is a burgeoning sector of the Australian organic industry.

"" ""

Adele McConnell, founder of Vegiehead.com tells Zookie, “I care about my health; and the environment. I’m a big supporter of small business and growers, and know the power that comes from choosing organic. I want to care for my husband and my two dogs in the best way I can—and knowing that we’re eating and using organic products allows me to do that.

"" ""

“I believe there are many benefits to feeding your pet organic! Not only do I know exactly what my dogs are consuming, I really believe that it leads to healthier dogs. They don’t have a ‘doggy’ smell, their breath is clean, and their droppings don’t have the same stink that many of their doggy friends’ poo does! We watch their weight carefully, but I know that they require less as their nutrient intake is much higher.”

For anyone who is interested in switching to certified organic, but budget is tight, Adele says, “Start small. Check out my blog for two free PDFs that’ll help you make your choices easier! It’s simple to substitute some of the ‘cleaner’ fruits and vegetables for others.

""""

“Carrots and sweet potatoes…and any vegetable really can be replaced with organic! Most farmers markets have an organic stall, and there are a number of organic food delivery services across the country, making choosing organic so much easier.

“Australian Organic Awareness Month (AOAM) is such a great initiative—it brings awareness to not only the importance of choosing organics, but also the farmers, growers, and small businesses that carry the seal of approval.”

Homemade organic dog food recipe

Fancy treating your four-legged friend to a homemade organic treat? Adele shares her recipe for Green Cookies, taken from her latest ebook ‘Delicious Doggy Dishes.’

""""

Green Cookies

1 cup organic quinoa flour

1 cup organics buckwheat flour

1 cup savoury yeast flakes (nutritional yeast)

1 tbsp spirulina

1 free range egg

1 tbsp cold pressed olive oil

1/2 cup water (plus extra if needed)

Preheat oven to 180ºC

Combine flours, yeast flakes and spirulina together

Whisk egg, oil and water, and combine

Knead lightly, until it forms a strong dough

If it’s too crumbly, add a small amount of water until desired consistency is reached

Roll out into 1/8’’ thickness, and cut into rounds (use a cookie cutter)

Place cookies onto a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes or until crispy
